Where do His children sit?
“…nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” -Psalms 1:1
Hasn't He moved us out of such horrible seating by His grace? He has moved us out from among those who delighted and shared in similar mockery and disdain as we. The most scornful are those having first heard the truth yet despised its correction, or are offended by its seeming silence when difficult circumstances arise. Moreover, maybe the thing that offends the scornful is that the truth seems to provide a lack of restraint when the tempter comes along. Or the claim of its endorsement of evil when consequences have not yet followed their sinning. All sitting in such futile thinking is deception. The devil’s detour most often taken starts by partaking in ungodly behavior, next continuing in that ungodly behavior or practice as sinners do, and then making an exception for ourselves in this practice, mocking or coldly resisting the truth, and those who are committed to the truth, who do not consider our exceptions valid for entering the Kingdom of God.
‘Lord, where do your children sit?’ This question came forth from His presence as I sat in worship one afternoon. Later, meditating on verses in First Peter this theme continued to present itself. The talk of being begotten of God to an incorruptible, undefiled inheritance that does not fade away. (See 1Pet. 1:3-4). Or, the stating that we have not been redeemed with corruptible things but with the precious blood of Christ. (See 1Pet. 1:18-19). Moreover, we have been born again, “not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.” (1Pet. 1:23).
The things that God has given us are incorruptible. While money is often corrupted when manufactured and used, the blood of Christ is incorruptible. While cohabitation can be viewed as the corrupting or defiling of a marital relationship or friendship, the blood of Christ whereby we are brought back into a right relationship with God is incorruptible. The incorruptible blood of Christ has been used to redeem men and women from bondage to sin. It was shed and applied to appease the wrath of God and satisfy His judgment that we could be reconciled to a holy God. One cannot manipulate or corrupt it to yield a different outcome. People, however, are or can be corrupted. The scripture says, “But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.” (Gal. 2:17-18). He will remain true even if we don’t.
How do we remain true to our God, when everything about the lust of man, and the things whereby men lust after are corrupted and defiled, and will one day fade away? We are told in scripture that by the blood of Christ, we have been purged from an evil conscience (Ref. Heb. 9:13-14; 10:22-23). A heart not sprinkled with the blood of Christ from this evil conscience leaves one without remorse in their treatment of others. Demonstrating perhaps an inability to express true gratitude for the kindness of others toward them, and deceived as to why they should. We are told in scripture that we have had our bodies washed with pure water. We have purified our souls by obeying the truth through the Spirit thereby bringing about a love in our relating with one another that is pure, sincere, and without hypocrisy. (Ref. 1Pet. 1:22). This love is corrupted the moment we cease to obey the truth. It was when we were ignorant of the truth that we were in constant pursuit of our lustful desires, especially at the expense of others. He has delivered us from an evil conscience that promoted our soul pursuits. We now receive and walk in obedience to the truth. One day, God will change even this corruptible body to that which is incorruptible. Through obedience to the truth, God has called us to be His children indeed, by being holy even as He is holy, both now and forever.
Where do His children sit? They sit undefiled and uncorrupted. They were bought by that which is incorruptible - the blood. They remember it. They were born by that which is incorruptible - the word of truth. They obey it. There is a promise given unto them of inheritance that is also incorruptible, undefiled, and fades not away. In the eternal inheritance from God is where their hope resides. In a place distinguishable from every other place, our hope has no place more secure. Do we His children want the incorruptible? Are we His children pursuing the undefiled?
In deep worship one day, I asked the Lord by His Spirit, 'Where do your children sit?' By the end of my time in this place where His presence was felt, He spoke to my heart in answer to my question. His response was, "Wherever He is."
